Animation Analysis (1)

So let's talk aimation folks!

Disclaimer - This animation post (and future animation posts) are for educational purposes only!
For that reason I am only allowing the videos to be seen either on  my Vimeo Page or on this blog, and they are not available for download. I know we would all like to frame by frame this scene together, but I assure you that my description will suffice! I will however post a link to buy the dvd on amazon at the end of each of these successive posts.

Secondly, I am not an authority (or the authority) on animation. These studies are for myself to continually improve and learn as much as they are for everybody else! My drawings replicating the animation, however, can be clicked on and enlarged for better viewing and understanding of my rambling.

So heres the scene:

Goofy - The Big Wash (action analysis) from FantasticAdam on Vimeo.

So lets break down the first half of the scene (getting out of bed - stomping on the shoes)

Here's all of the key's we will be discussing:

Goofy - The Big Wash: Part 1 Keys from FantasticAdam on Vimeo.

Get on your feet!

I realize now that i have it timed on evens, though traditionally most scenes would be timed on odds, evens would be for actions on 1's - my video exported with an extra frame in the beginning. This is a hook up pose from the previous scene, and as such is the first key to moving into the specific acting for this scene. Frames 2, 16, and 28 are the main storytelling keys to get Goofy on his feet.

For now let's focus how the action travels from frame 2 to 16.
For us to clearly do that we should discuss the timing chart and placement of the breakdown.
The breakdown is spaced onto frame 10 and there ease in and ease out drawing spacing on 1/2's surrounding it.
In plain English - drawing 10 is half the distance to drawing 16 -
Drawing 8 is half the distance between drawing 2 and drawing 10 or 1/4
Drawing 6 is 1/2 of 8 and 2 or 1/8

This is the breakdown:

Beautiful perspective on those feet and legs, right?

for further analysis lets see the motion chart for this action:

The most interesting thing i found about this motiion is that while both legs lead with the feet - that the leg screen left arcs on the bottom of the heel and the leg screen right arcs on the ball of the foot. Notice how the Arcs are organic S shapes - not standard C curves. There is also an orange arc on frame 16 of the foot screen right - this is because this foot is already moving into the next chart, as this foot arrives at our next key and several frames later (no twinning, of course!).

The next key is frame 28 -
the timing is almost the same as the beginning except that it's an ease into the breakdown and an ease into the key.

The Breakdown between 16 and 28 is:

the action continues past this breakdown into a down position at frame 26 - what i would say is an "mini" antic/ his hips arriving late

This "mini antic"/ motion is important because it prepares our eyes for Goofy's next action - taking off his pajamas.

The timing between key 28 and the breakdown on frame 34 is evenly spaced (body-wise). However, the head moves at an interesting tilt and accents the dialogue at that moment (I will discuss the head-movement in another post).
The hands lead us into the next key where the action continues to shoot upward. On frame 30 the hands start to move downward. On Frame 32 Goofy's hands move downward and inward just to about the top of his hip bone level.

However on frame 34 they pop pretty far and make a jump into the breakdown (take a look at the difference between 32 and 34). Goofy's action continues evenly for one more drawing (36) until he reaches the top of his action at frame 38.

The next key after frame 38 is frame 44 - Where Goofy has completely discarded his robe and his leg is beginning to antic into the movement where he stomps on his shoes sending them airborne.

From there he hits the full antic up two frames later -

the stomp two frame after the leg antic

And then eases into this entire body antic - which is achieved with straight inbetweens on 2's

I restrained writing completely in depth motion charting all the motions between keys, and breaking them down (writing takes me a lot longer than drawing!) If I'm not boring you all to death and that there is some interest in me continuing this type of posting, I will continue the analysis more in-depth in the future and even do a "slo-mo", and "slo-mo keyframe only" video.

coming up next, what you all have been waiting for:

The Shuffle! (analysis and practical application)
and some cool things i learned from goofy's head/ear overlapping action

Goofy (Action Analysis)

Hey there friends -
In an attempt to learn from the masters and to improve my animation skills I have been doing some action analysis of classic scenes.

I'm debating posting the results here to share - or starting a new blog and doing just analysis on that one.

Thoughts?

Wishing Tree

I was up in New Hampshire this past weekend - snuck in a little time to draw this sketch.

I guess I'm really having a lot of fun drawing trees and plants lately.

Here's a piece that is on Terrible Yellow Eyes - tons of lovely art on that site!

This was my favorite book as a child - and I can't wait to see the movie.

also - here's a sketch i did while feeling out the characters.

Moving!

Hey there folks - While I have enjoyed my time at TumorBloomer, I believe it's now time for me to start a new blog (with a name that is easier to remember) and to make a real website.

So for now I'm taking the work on this site down to keep myself motivated.

I'll post the new link when it's up!
